Papua New Guinea made its Commonwealth Games début in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth. The country has competed in eleven editions of the Games to date.

Papua New Guineans have won three medals in boxing, two in lawn bowls, one in shooting, one in swimming and one in weightlifting.

Geua Tau won the country's first Commonwealth gold by defeating New Zealand's Millie Cecilia Khan 25-18 in lawn bowls (women's singles) during the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Papua New Guinea's second gold medal came in 2006 Commonwealth Games, when Ryan Pini won the men's 100m butterfly event in swimming, with a time of 52.64 seconds.
